Cashfree expands global access to Indian payments

Cashfree Payments has expanded its cross-border payments capabilities, allowing businesses across 40 countries to accept payments from Indian consumers through popular local payment methods, including UPI, RuPay cards, debit and credit cards, and net banking.

The company said its cross-border payments suite is now fully operational across key markets in North America, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region through a combination of partnerships and direct integrations. The expansion enables global merchants to access India’s rapidly growing consumer market without the need to establish a local entity or payment infrastructure within the country.

The offering is designed to support businesses across sectors such as e-commerce, SaaS, travel, and digital goods, where payment localisation plays a crucial role in improving customer experience and conversion rates. Indian consumers continue to favour domestic payment methods, making localised checkout options increasingly important for international merchants targeting the market.

Commenting on the expansion, Akash Sinha, Co-founder and CEO, Cashfree Payments, said, “India’s consumer economy is growing rapidly, driven by one of the world’s largest bases of digitally active consumers. This is a market that global businesses cannot afford to ignore. However, one of the deepest challenges for them has been offering a seamless payment experience. Indian consumers are used to paying by local methods like UPI or RuPay credit or debit cards. Entering this market without offering these payment methods has a direct impact on customer conversions.”

He added, “We wanted to bridge this gap for international merchants and make it easier for them to tap into the growing consumer economy of India. These capabilities are currently availed by merchants in these 40 countries, but can be extended to other global merchants in other countries too.”

According to the company, many international businesses currently rely on global card networks to receive payments from Indian consumers, which can limit accessibility for customers who do not possess credit cards or have not enabled international transactions. Cashfree believes its localised payment infrastructure can help improve payment success rates while reducing transaction friction for merchants and consumers alike.
