NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) have announced a strategic partnership with ACLEDA Bank Plc, Cambodia’s first publicly listed commercial bank. ACLEDA, nominated by the National Bank of Cambodia as the operator of the country’s national QR network Bakong (KHQR), will work with NIPL to facilitate UPI acceptance across Cambodia and KHQR acceptance across India.
The network-to-network integration will broaden the use of QR-based payments for travellers, merchants and businesses in both countries, enhancing convenience and interoperability.
Under the partnership, Indian travellers will be able to use their UPI-enabled apps to make payments at more than 4.5 million KHQR merchant touchpoints across Cambodia, including tourist attractions, restaurants and retail outlets. Cambodian travellers visiting India will gain the ability to scan from over 709 million UPI QR codes, enabling seamless payments through their domestic Cambodian payment apps.
The collaboration will offer businesses in both nations access to a secure and frictionless payment ecosystem supported by UPI and KHQR, promoting faster and more affordable cross-border transactions.
The initiative aligns with ASEAN’s objective of advancing regional payment interoperability and strengthening inclusive digital economies. It also builds on NIPL’s expanding global presence, following partnerships with BENEFIT in Bahrain, PayPal, Razorpay Curlec in Malaysia, NTT in Japan and Magnati in the UAE, underscoring the scalability and global relevance of India’s real-time payments infrastructure.
