Paytm enables UPI payments for NRIs using international mobile numbers

Paytm has introduced a new feature that allows Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) to make UPI payments in India using their international mobile numbers.

With this feature, NRIs can now log in to the Paytm app using their foreign numbers, link their Non-Resident External (NRE) or Non-Resident Ordinary (NRO) bank accounts, and carry out seamless UPI transactions, including online shopping, payments at physical stores, and transfers to family members in India. The update eliminates the need for an Indian SIM card or currency conversion, making payments faster and more convenient for Indians living abroad.

Developed in collaboration with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the feature is currently in its beta phase and is being rolled out for users from 12 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Australia, and Canada.

The launch aligns with Paytm’s strategy to strengthen its core payments business and extend its UPI ecosystem to a global audience. By enabling international mobile number access, the company is helping expand the reach of India’s world-leading digital payments network to its growing diaspora.

Industry experts view the move as a milestone in India’s FinTech evolution, bridging cross-border financial access and showcasing UPI’s potential as a globally scalable payments framework.
