Tripura Gramin Bank has achieved a national first by launching a solar-powered ATM van, making it the first Gramin Bank in India to introduce such an innovation. The initiative marks a significant step toward promoting sustainable and inclusive banking, especially in remote and underserved areas of Tripura.
The pioneering move has earned the bank the SKOCH Silver Award, one of the country’s most respected recognitions for excellence in governance and innovation. Expressing pride over the achievement, Jeet Bhattacharya, Marketing Head of Tripura Gramin Bank, said the honour belongs not just to the bank but to the people of Tripura. He described it as a proud moment for the state, as this is the first time the bank has received such a prestigious national-level award from the SKOCH Group for innovative practices.
Tripura Gramin Bank operates around 150 branches across some of the most remote and interior parts of the state, playing a key role in financial inclusion and economic development. The introduction of the solar-powered ATM van has further strengthened the bank’s ability to provide banking services in rural and difficult-to-access regions, ensuring uninterrupted access even in areas with limited or unreliable electricity supply.
The solar-powered ATM van initiative was formally inaugurated by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on July 21, 2023, during her visit to Tripura. At present, the bank operates three solar-powered ATM vans, offering eco-friendly and reliable banking services to communities across the state
Bhattacharya added that this is likely the first such solar-powered ATM service introduced by any Gramin Bank in India, making the achievement even more significant. He said the recognition motivates the bank to continue strengthening its commitment to innovation, sustainability and customer service
With this landmark project, Tripura Gramin Bank has set a new benchmark in rural banking and reinforced Tripura’s growing visibility on the national innovation and sustainability map.
