Tata Capital receives $16 million GCF Fund to boost India’s green start-up ecosystem

Tata Capital Limited has collaborated with the Green Climate Fund (GCF) under the newly approved BEACON INDIA Programme.

The collaboration aims to accelerate the growth of early-stage climate-tech start-ups across India, fostering innovation in sustainability and low-carbon solutions.

Under the agreement, Tata Capital will receive a first-of-its-kind revolving facility of approximately $15.85 million from the GCF, complemented by an additional $3 million grant to make financing more accessible for climate-focused ventures. The revolving structure ensures long-term support as start-ups repay their loans, the funds will be reinvested to back new green enterprises, creating a continuous cycle of sustainability financing.

Tata Capital will also contribute $ 47.6 million of its own capital, reaffirming its commitment to nurturing India’s climate innovation landscape. The initiative is projected to reduce more than 1.1 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions and benefit nearly 2.9 million people through climate adaptation and mitigation measures.

Rajiv Sabharwal, Managing Director and CEO, Tata Capital Limited, said, “Tata Capital has always been committed to green initiatives for a sustainable future. Our association with the Green Climate Fund to strengthen India’s climate innovation network is another step in that direction. Through this programme, we aim to help emerging entrepreneurs scale their green technologies and make a measurable difference to people and the planet.”

This collaboration further cements Tata Capital’s leadership in green financing. In 2019, the company became the first private sector firm in India to partner with the GCF for rooftop solar financing.

With the new programme, Tata Capital now stands as the first Indian entity to collaborate with the GCF on two distinct climate initiatives, underscoring its long-term dedication to sustainable growth and India’s transition toward a low-carbon economy.

Tata Capital Limited offers a comprehensive suite of financial services across consumer, housing, SME, and corporate segments through a network of over 1,500 branches in India. Its portfolio includes consumer finance, housing finance, cleantech finance, microfinance, debt syndication, private equity, and credit cards.
