PayPal partners with OpenAI to power In-App payments in ChatGPT

PayPal has announced a major collaboration with OpenAI to enable users to make seamless payments directly within ChatGPT, starting in 2026. The integration will combine PayPal’s digital wallet and payments technology with OpenAI’s “Instant Checkout” feature, allowing users to browse, order, and pay for products without leaving the chat interface.

As part of the partnership, PayPal will adopt OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), an open-source standard that enables merchants to showcase their products within AI apps. Users will be able to complete purchases using their PayPal accounts, benefiting from built-in buyer protection and dispute resolution services.

From next year, merchants using PayPal will have their product catalogs discoverable within ChatGPT across categories such as fashion, beauty, electronics, and home improvement, without needing any additional integrations.

PayPal also plans to introduce an agentic commerce suite that helps merchants feature catalogs across AI platforms, process payments, and access insights into consumer behavior.

The partnership marks PayPal’s latest step in embedding itself into AI-powered shopping ecosystems. The company previously teamed up with Perplexity for in-chat checkout and adopted Google’s Agent Payments Protocol.

“Hundreds of millions of people turn to ChatGPT each week to discover products they love, and over 400 million use PayPal to shop,” said Alex Chriss, President and CEO, PayPal.

“By partnering with OpenAI, we’re making it possible for users to go from chat to checkout in just a few taps,” he added.
