CoverSure flags rising urban health risks in India

CoverSure’s Health Risk Index has revealed that 25 per cent of urban Indians face heightened respiratory health risks, while 1 in 5 show early signs of cardiovascular vulnerability, based on data from nearly 50,000 individuals across 35 states and union territories.

The index assigns India’s urban population a composite health risk score of 36.6 on a scale of 0 to 100, reflecting the growing impact of lifestyle and environmental factors on long-term health.

The findings highlight how daily factors such as air quality, long commute hours, sedentary lifestyles, and irregular sleep patterns are contributing to rising health risks. Respiratory issues remain widespread across cities due to pollution and seasonal infections, while cardiovascular risks are increasing due to inactivity, stress, and poor sleep habits.

Around 40 per cent of individuals assessed were classified as overweight or obese, increasing susceptibility to conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. Lifestyle trends further reinforce these risks, with 67 per cent reporting no regular physical activity and 55 per cent sleeping fewer than six hours per night.

Among young adults aged 18–25, early risk indicators are already visible, including smoking habits, borderline blood pressure levels, and early signs of pre-hypertension, suggesting that lifestyle-linked health risks are emerging earlier than expected.

Saurabh Vijayvergia, Founder and CEO, CoverSure, noted that health risks are dynamic and influenced by evolving lifestyle and environmental factors, emphasising the importance of personalised risk awareness in both health management and insurance decisions.

The assessment underscores that health risks are driven by a combination of behavioural, environmental, and physiological factors, making early awareness increasingly critical as healthcare costs continue to rise.
