Cashfree launches AI agents for SMB payments

Cashfree Payments has launched Relay, an AI Super Agent that automates end-to-end payment operations for small and medium-sized businesses and startups. The product is now available to all Cashfree merchants after being tested in beta since May 2026.

Relay is designed to handle tasks such as recovering abandoned carts, retrying failed payments, confirming cash-on-delivery orders, managing subscription failures and filing disputes. Cashfree says an average SMB spends around 60 hours each week on payment operations, while Relay aims to reduce this workload to less than 45 minutes.

Unlike conventional automation tools that require businesses to configure separate workflows, Relay allows merchants to describe the result they want through text or voice. The platform can then deploy a ready-made agent or create a customised one to complete the task.

Reeju Datta, Co-founder, Cashfree Payments, said, “For early-stage SMBs with lean teams, managing payment follow-ups and operations can consume a significant portion of the day. Relay acts as an intelligent team member, seamlessly taking over and automating these critical workflows.”

Cashfree said 7 in 10 Indian SMBs still manage payment operations entirely through manual processes. Relay is built to execute actions directly instead of simply flagging issues for teams to resolve.

The platform requires merchant approval before money is moved or a customer is contacted, while all activities remain visible to the merchant. Cashfree also said merchant transaction data is not shared with external AI providers.

Ramkumar Venkatesan, Chief Technology Officer, Cashfree Payments, said, “Relay solves this by providing SMBs with turnkey agents that deliver immediate impact, along with the flexibility to build custom agents simply by specifying desired outcomes.”

Relay is available free to Cashfree merchants at launch, with the company planning to introduce outcome-based pricing as adoption grows.
